MDLM ART CRUSH | CHARLOTTE HAYWOOD

Wild, colourful and loaded with hidden messages; Charlotte Haywood's work is a delight for the senses.

Based in Australia, this multi disciplinary artist draws upon her fascination with the transient notion of time and cultural heritage to create her eye catching, surreal designs. Her work incorporates motifs of "the introduced" and "the tourist"; elements which provoke a feeling of self reflection and discovery.

Charlotte works extensively in the world of film and television and has also completed artistic residencies in Thailand, India and Peru where she delved into the ancient traditions and customs of each place. Her experiences deeply enrich her work, which engages audiences through the untangling and reconstruction of deep rooted cultural histories.

Her tapestries intertwine "socially charged" found objects such as uniforms, life vests, high visibility garments etc... all of which bare witness to the entrenched power frameworks in which we operate. Her latest collection of works, named "Green Asylum" keeps to this theme, offering the onlooker a glance at the forever evolving Australian landscape with the focus on the sacred and traditional shelters of the aboriginal and nomadic people. Haywood's work takes the viewer on a journey through past, present and future allowing them to pull on their own cultural references to interpret the work. These intricately woven structures, bursting with colour and texture, remind the viewer that as the landscape and nature forms around us, it is our actions that speak the loudest.

This artist is certainly one to keep a watch on as her work transcends the barriers of communication and communicates important, socially rich issues through fun bursts of colour, kooky structures and an abundance of texture. Now this is how I want to talk about the nitty gritty- lets bring some vibrancy back into our lives.
