Burberry Prorsum AW12/13 |
It is safe to say, judging from the shows seen at Milan Menswear Fashion Week so far, that AW12/13 will be the season of the suit. Designers have taken inspiration from the days when men were gentlemen-refined, well mannered, fashionable gentlemen and have created their collections around the suave and sophisticated connotations that the suit provides.
A suit is a symbol of security in a man's wardrobe. It is a symbol of masculinity even when worn by women. On the catwalks in Milan, look after look features a suit as designers make subtle tweaks and changes to each one, providing an exciting new look. Burberry Prorsum's show, inspired by the British 'dandy', showcased a selection of double breasted jackets that hugged the model's torso, pipe cleaner thin trousers and beautifully cut suit jackets interjected by the occasional floppy scoop neck knits with pictures of owls and foxes embroidered onto the front and a fun, colourful umbrella with a birds head as a handle. Suits also featured on the catwalk for the Bottega Veneta show but this time, pattern was made the centre of attention. The regular suit jacket had undergone a make over as the boring grey fabric had been updated with giant polka dots in shades of blue, black and brown in addition to coloured panels being added in to the pockets and lapels of the jacket.
We are on the brink of a menswear revolution, fuelled by men's desires to always look perfectly turned out and our constantly evolving, renewed interest in classic tailoring. Never before in my lifetime has menswear caused such a flurry of excitement to brew in the world of fashion and now, designers are riding the wave producing collection after collection of innovative designs. Despite the fact that every collection so far has featured the suit as it's focus point, each collection has provided something interesting and new, bringing back the zest and vitality that has been missing from menswear for a long time.
