SURFER BABE

I never would have thought I would ever have taken a surf lesson. But I did. Tenerife has a strange hold over everyone who visits this beautiful island, making them leave their comfort zone on the plane and allowing them to fall head over heels for all the natural splendour on show.

After nursing a phobia of the sea for as long as I can remember, I decided that it was time to face my fears and experience another side to island living... Surfing. I roped in my friends and we left for a day trip to Taganana where the waves are gentle enough for beginners but still powerful enough to get all your muscles moving.

The day was organised through Fitenia Surf Shop, located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. They drove us out of the city centre around the zigzagging coastline, to the best surfing beaches in the north. The day began with a short introduction to the key skills required for surfing and then we were let loose into the ocean for the rest of the day, only stopping for a small bocadillo and Coke at lunch.

It was such a challenging day, physically and mentally but I completed a dream of mine. The company were so friendly and really looked after us all, even providing us with photos of the class through their Facebook page. I can't wait to be able to get back on the board again.
