Interview with Sara Ebbett. Creator of Elegance and style!

Sara Ebbett's scarves immediately grab your attention with their bright array of  colour and impeccable quality. Her latest collection, 'Folded Paper', which was exhibited at London Fashion Week this year, is inspired by 1930's Geisha and perfectly epitomises the free spirited, stylish and fun personality of the Sara Ebbett 'woman'.

With so much hype surrounding her name, Sara is definitely set to achieve great things and she is already jet setting off to Dubai and Italy to manage her business as well as juggling her design commitments in England. Whenever I tweet her she is always knee deep in fabric samples or planning her next set of designs. The Sara Ebbett brand is like a machine, producing one exquisite scarf after another.

The scarves themselves are so elegant and can be worn by someone of any age as long as they have style. The beautiful 'ice-cream' coloured palette gives them a sweet, feminine edge which is sometimes contrasted by the jagged, geometric shapes that adorn some of her designs to give the scarves a modern, urban edge. These scarves are an essential item in any girl's wardrobe...I cannot get enough of them!!

Moda de la Mode was lucky enough to interview Sara Ebbett to find out more about her life and work...

1) Have you always known that you would become a designer. If not, when you were a child, what was your dream occupation?

I knew I wanted to be able to create beautiful 'things'..I have my mother to thank for that. She was always surrounded by the most gorgeous fabrics, trimmings and embroidered art that my Grandmother had done. She would save me the spare cut offs and trimmings for me to play with when I was a child and, taught me the importance of accessorising from a very early age. My elder sister taught me how to sew on her old Singer Manual Pedal machine, I made a cocktail dress for my Barbie and a sequin satchel for my My Little Pony!

2) What does fashion mean to you? How has it shaped who you are as a person and as a designer?

It's a form of expression and it's personal. I've never been one to 'follow' fashion trends as I believe its a medium to be enjoyed and an opporunity to be creative. As a designer, I have always focused on detail it's this artisan approach that I appreciate and I hope that's seen in the way I design too.

3)What inspires you to design? A lot of designers have a muse, do you and if so why do they inspire you?

I'm inspired by my surroundings, travel and I'm a sucker for a good story although I have been labelled a museum geek! I don't have a muse as I create characters and narratives for each collection, just by people that I meet or know however, I always stay true to who a Sara Ebbett woman is - free-spirited, stylish and fun!

4) What is the best bit of advice you have received?

Stay true to your identity.

5) What advice would you give someone trying to break into the industry?

It's hard work and a career won't happen over night. Believe in your designs, keep working hard and respect your fellow peers.

6) Many designers such as Dolce & Gabbana use fashion bloggers to promote their collections and invite them to the fashion shows to report on their collections. What is your view on fashion bloggers?

The Blogger that takes a journalistic approach is proving to be as influential as some of the fashion editors. It's a relationship that Designers need to embrace. Luxury fashion has become accessable to the masses via social media and I'd say the Blogger phenomenon has contributed to that. I've been very fortunate to meet some some great bloggers.
7) What is the one item of clothing you wish people wore more often?

Scarves!

8)How did you find the transition from working with interiors and furniture to working with textiles and fashion?

I went to a fantastic design school where I was surrounded by Fashion, textiles, graphic, and fine art students. Working professionaly I would reference Degas one day, work in collaboration with a Turner Prize winner the next or be inspired by walking around Hoxton Square where I used to live. Everything that I learnt in Interiors I have been able to apply to my label. I'm a bit of a sponge like that..
9) As a designer, you have a very hectic life. Where is your favourite holiday destination and why?

To date, it would have to be New Zealand. Waiheke Island off Auckland harbour is the most beautiful place I have been too. Relaxed, tranquil and so colourful, it seems untouched. Don't even start me on all the fresh food...

10) Where is your favourite place on the high street to shop?

Top Shop
