The Essential Uni Wardrobe

With many of my friends starting the next chapter of their lives at university this month, I thought I would share with you what I consider to be the essential university wardrobe. Having worked at a university helping out with enrolment and induction, I have seen a whole range of students and their personal styles. These next few looks, for me conjure up a stylish elegance which is also (dare I say it) practical and comfortable.

Anouska Proetta Brandon is a model and blogger based in Ireland. Here she combines the essential items for university which are: a big bag to carry everything around in, flat sturdy shoes for walking around campus all day, an oversized jumper for keeping warm (obviously) and of course a chic pair of shades, used not only to keep the sun out of your eyes (as she is doing here) but also to scout out the best looking boys on the campus-sneaky huh?! Anyway, she has the stylish student look played out to perfection and you can see more of her beautiful photos on her blog http://www.anouskaproettabrandon.com/

What can I say about this look...Wow! It is tres tres chic. The combination of the blazer with the shorts and tights just creates the perfect autumnal look, as I suggested in my recent guest post on The Raspberry Branch Blog . This look is really simple and easy to wear well and to make it even easier, the outfit consists of things most people would generally have in their wardrobe such as a white t-shirt and a black pair of tights. Although this look may be a little too smart to wear everyday for uni, it is perfect for when you have to meet people for lunch or if you are applying for a job. It is a smart, elegant and youthful look which is perfect for when you have an occasion to dress smartly at uni.

Wildfox Couture have been a favourite label of mine for a long time, combining fun and frivolity with timeless classics. Whilst at uni, you will not only need a winter wardrobe but also a summer one. However, when you are on a limited budget then it is important that you make things last. This means buying quality items that will last (not Primark) and making sure you wear layers. The jumper that you see in this photo here may not be designed to be worn in the cold snowy climate of England but worn with layers underneath in the winter, it will last you the whole 12 months of the year. Now that is careful planning.

It wouldn't be acceptable to write a post on the essential items for uni and not put in a coat. I have just got off the phone with my best friend who has moved away to university and she was moaning that she has forgotten to bring a coat with her and that the weather is getting colder. The brightness of this coat worn by blogger Ebba Zingmark really contrasts with the darkness of the rest of her outfit and as a result creates a focal point for the outfit. There are so many varieties of coats on the market at the moment that you are really spoilt for choice. My advice though is to go for a coat with a hood as you can shelter from the elements straight away without having to worry about taking an umbrella or hat with you when you go out. A bright coloured coat is also nice as it can lift your mood on a grey day. If you would like to see more looks by Ebba then take a look at her beautiful blog http://nyheter24.se/modette/ebbazingmark/

So, to conclude, here is a definitive list of the essential uni items of clothing for this year:

  • A coat
  • Jumpers
  • Strap tops to layer
  • Flat shoes to walk around campus in
  • A black blazer to wear to job interviews
  • A dress to wear to parties and formal dinners
  • A carry all bag
  • A pair of jeans
  • Cardigans
  • Scarf to keep warm or use as a quilt/curtain in your room
What do you consider the essential items of clothing for university?
