Menswear Mondays: The Morning Suit Vs Lounge Suit

With the upcoming Royal Wedding between Prince William and Catherine Middleton, I thought I would share with you the dress code for men at this big event. On the invitations to the wedding, the dress code is stated as Morning Suit or Lounge Suit, but what does this all mean?

The Morning suit is more commonly known as the top hat and tails and it consists of the morning coat, waistcoat, trousers and a top hat. The Lounge suit is made from the same fabric as the Morning suit but it is a less formal option made up from a suit jacket, trousers, white shirt and black tie.

Men most commonly only wear the Morning suit at weddings but it is also worn at Royal Ascot tea parties, Royal events and society funerals. Pupils at Eton school still wear the Morning suit to class everyday. The Lounge Suit is worn by men at nearly all formal events and has a sudden rise in popularity due to the TV show Mad Men which is set in the 1960's. Many designers have experimented with revolutionising the Lounge Suit since the 1960's, changing the width of the lapels or the style of trousers.

Whatever the occasion, it is always important that men are smartly dressed and I hope now that you know the difference between the Morning Suit and the Lounge Suit. Lets see how many men wear the Morning suit on Friday for the Royal Wedding!!
