MDLM GUIDE TO: COLUMBIA ROAD

Now that the weather is warming up and Spring has created an explosion of colour on every hedgerow and in every garden, Columbia Road flower market in London’s East End is the perfect place to while away a Sunday morning.
A quite side street during the week, on Sunday, this road is home to a gentle bustle of people, all in search of a glorious bouquet at discount prices.
Peonies and roses are my favourite blooms but you cannot ignore the wide array of flora and fauna on offer. Cacti, banana trees and pink pineapples give the market an exotic edge whilst you can always rely on sweet peas and sunflowers in the summer months to give the market a strong English identity.
When you are weighed down by blooms and arms are getting achy, take a trip to Lily Vanilli’s bakery tucked away around the corner from all the market stalls. Lily bakes a feast of cakes, pastries and other delicious morsels every weekend, all decorated with her signature style of adding edible flowers to the surface of the cake.
What is your favourite Sunday ritual?
