10 Things We Have Learnt From Fashion Week AW/12

Fashion week is one of fashion's most highly anticipated events of the year with four major cities exhibiting their selection of designers as well as many smaller fashion weeks being held across the rest of the world.

Each season something causes controversy, someone becomes the new It-girl and there is always one designer who turns into a wardrobe staple. This begs the question, what have we learnt from this season's shows?

1) McQueen is not Dead-The king of fashion may have died two years ago but the McQueen brand is as alive as ever. The fashion crown has been passed to Sarah Burton who is now steering the house into a new era. After not showing the Alexander McQueen label in the UK for 10 years and not showing McQ at all, Sarah Burton put on a stellar show for McQ at Somerset House proving that the ghost of McQueen lives on.

2) Karl Lagerfeld is still the biggest showman in fashion- Lagerfeld has always been a showman, his appearance is enough to tell us this fact. However, this season he became editor of Metro Newspaper for the day allowing him to share his controversial world view with the masses. Whilst editor, he channeld his inner rockstar proclaiming that if he was a Russian woman, he "would be a lesbian as Russian men are very ugly" in addition to other horrendous comments including one insisting that President Obama would never have been elected if it wasn't for his wife. Errr....whatever you say King Karl.

3)Mary Katrantzou is the name on everybody's lips-You would have to have been living under a rock for Mary Katrantzou to pass you by. Her bright, bold provided stunning eye candy for show attendees when exhibiting in London. Her recent collaboration with Topshop also helped her to propel this designer into the spotlight.

4) Everyone will own something that has a digital print-Thanks to the innovative Mary Katrantzou, everyone will be owning at least one item which has a digitally created print featured on it somewhere. Zara have already incorporated it into their SS12 collection and I am sure others will follow soon. Watch this space.

5) The key trend for AW12/13 is... Purity! This trend embraces clean lines and simple silhouettes with designers such as Raf Simons and Stefano Pilati championing this minimal look. Fuss free and elegant, this trend is designed to show off the fierce tailoring and cut of the garments rather than focus on the superfluous amounts of texture and colour. Who needs peplums when you have purity?

6) Colour Palette is...Purple Purple Purple! From violet to lavender, a purple haze drifted across all the fashion weeks this season. During London Fashion Week, Christopher Kane paraded a collection of purple jumpers and dresses on a catwalk carpeted in lavender and designers like Gucci in Milan also followed suit, embracing the colour for AW12/13.

7) We are more like Sh*t Fashion Girls Say than we think- The Platform's collection of videos has had the fashion world in stitches with it's super realistic portrayal of fashion insiders. Bloggers beware-it may be have you thinking twice about the way you act during fashion week next season.

8) We have moved into a digital age- Outside Somerset House, large screens were erected showcasing the live stream from many London Fashion Week shows whilst the blogger bar and press area were more buzzing than ever with the vast number of people desperate to update their virtual networks with all the latest LFW gossip. However, what really grabbed people's attention was the number of designers who only exhibited online, Prabal Gurung and Chloe are brands that spring to mind. Editors were invited to log on to the password protected site and watch the show in the comfort of their own homes....what a wonderful idea.

9) Hair is getting experimental- The McQ show saw hair halos balanced on the heads of the models, the Vivienne Westwood saw a girl gang inspired curled and quiff look and Meadham Kirchhoff used brightly coloured, curled weaves to accessories the hair of their models, but one thing is for sure, AW12 is the season for bold hair.

10) Freja Beha Erichsen has disappeared off our radars- Where has this wonder girl gone? Throughout the whole of the AW12 shows, she has remained unseen on and off the runway allowing younger models like Charlotte Free to steal the limelight. She must be working on one mega project to disappear completely off our radars.
